Cologne, Europe, Lana Grossa, Munich, plane, socks, stripes

Older Soknitsome Daughter sent this yarn to me from Munich via Mr Soknitsome’s suitcase last January.Ball of yarn

In March it accompanied me to Europe and spent the weekend in Munich with Older Soknitsome Daughter and her then fiancé. I knitted about half a foot. The project was laid aside for others until it was time to head off to Europe again. Red striped socksThere was some knitting-on-a-plane between Cologne and Salzburg and even a spot of knitting during some downtime in Salzburg, where we spent a long weekend for Older Soknitsome Daughter’s wedding. By the time I left Cologne to head back to Sydney, the toe of the second sock was cast on. I finally finished these at knit night yesterday.

I’ve knitted stripey socks like these before. The pattern’s Magic Zauberball Stripe Socks by Tofutrulla and you knit alternating 5-round stripes from yarn with long colour changes. This yarn is Lana Grossa Meilenweit Magico which is very similar to Schoppel Zauberball. Last time, I actually broke the yarn and moved on a bit whenever the two colours got too close. This time, I either swapped anyway or knitted 10 rounds in the same colour so I have some blurred stripes but the overall effect is similar. Naturally there were fewer ends to sew in, too.

So what’s next? Continue with the cardigan I started in Europe, cast on my ‘social knitting’ project and of course some more socks!

blanket, cardigan, Germany, knitting, Lana Grossa, socks, yarn

Since I arrived back in Sydney last month I’ve been working very hard to complete the Final Secret Project. It’s finished but still a secret for now.

striped blanket square

When the light’s not been good enough to work on that I’ve been knitting some more pieces for the Lizard Ridge blanket I started almost 18 months ago. The end is in sight. I have one more piece to finish and then comes the major job of sewing them all together…

I’ve been really good and haven’t worked on anything else at the same time. Not the socks I started in Germany, not the cardigan I want to make for me.

yarn and patternHowever, it’s almost time to head off to the airport for another long-haul flight back to Germany. (That really makes me sound like I’m some kind of jet-setter when it’s just been how family events have turned out). I’m looking forward to some serious knitting time. I have that sock I started and I have a new cardigan to cast on! The sock is a Magic Zauberball Stripe sock but I’m using a Lana Grossa yarn that also has long colour stripes.

The cardigan will be my third and final attempt project with this lovely black yarn with flecks of red and blue in it.  The cardigan is knitted seamlessly but from the bottom-up. It’s an ideal travel project if you want something a bit more substantial since the sleeves are knitted separately and then joined to the body. Once you’re manoeuvring the whole garment in your lap you’ve only got a short way to go. There’s more to this story but I’ll cast on first!

A Sunnyside for Easter

baby, cardigan, Germany, gift, Ravelry

When I flew to Germany late February, my travel knitting project was, surprisingly not a sock.

I thought I’d knit a cardigan instead. Well, a small cardigan. Having recently learnt how to cable without using a cable needle, this was the perfect opportunity to put my skills to the test. Sunnyside has cables down the fronts as well as at the raglan shaping. The yarn was an impulse buy in the first flush of ‘I’m going to be a Granny-ness’. It’s an acrylic-nylon blend, similar to Patons Big Baby but not as good. It was a bit splitty at times. However, the colour is just right for a baby in summertime and the cables show up nicely.

Cardigan in progressThe cardigan was easy to knit once I’d read a few helpful hints from other Ravellers and colour-coded my shaping markers. Red rings for Right-leaning increases and bLack rings for Left-leaning increases. After the set-up I could knit huge chunks without referring to the pattern. Just perfect when travelling.

Cardigan in progressThis is how far I’d got after two long-haul flights  (Sydney to Tokyo and Tokyo to Vienna).

I also followed what some other Ravellers have done and altered the direction of some of the cables (the pattern has them all going the same way) to make the cardigan symmetrical.

Baby cardigan with cables and little pink buttons

The buttons were bought in Germany and  the cardigan was given a quick wash and laid flat to dry before handing over as an early Easter ‘egg’.

This project is here on Ravelry

beach, blanket, holiday, Lizard Ridge, stripes, Sydney

Why?

Because right now Mr Soknitsome and I should be enjoying a holiday on Lord Howe Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global natural significance, lying in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand.

So why aren’t we enjoying our holiday?

It’s not a question of enjoying ourselves – there’s simply no holiday!

Things started well. We took off on the 90-minute flight to Lord Howe Island last Friday. We’d almost reached the island and then the pilot had us in a holding pattern for a good 30 minutes waiting to see if the weather would improve. It didn’t so we flew to Port Macquarie for refuelling and landed back in Sydney 5 1/4 hours after take-off.

Worse was to come.

There was no flight available until Sunday morning. Saturday passed slowly. We couldn’t really settle to anything. We weren’t meant to be at home.

Up bright and early on Sunday morning we headed off to the airport for our 7 am flight. Boarding was delayed twice. Not a good sign. Mr Soknitsome had found detailed weather forecasts on the bureau of meteorology’s website indicating low cloud. At 8 am our flight and the following one were cancelled. The weather wasn’t expected to improve.

Worse was to come.

Airline staff were saying we might be able to fly out on Wednesday. Yes, five days into our week’s holiday, we might be able to fly…

Holiday cancelled.

Back at home in Sydney we grudgingly unpacked (we weren’t meant to be at home), and did some grocery shopping to fill the empty fridge (because we weren’t meant to be there).

Ironically, the weather was lovely in Sydney so we walked over to Elizabeth Bay where we enjoyed an ice-cream and the view and tried not to complain about the holiday that wasn’t.View of sailing boats in harbour. Elizabeth Bay.

I even did some of my holiday knitting. I’d decided to make a few more pieces for the 4-ply weight Lizard Ridge blanket I’m making. Here’s what I knitted at the airport, on the flight, and on the beach by the sea…

Cologne, friends, Germany, gift, knitting, Ravelry, shawls, Stitch 'n' Bitch, yarn

The five weeks I spent in Europe were lovely. Time passed quickly and although I (and later Mr Soknitsome, too) spent time with many family members and friends, there were, sadly, people we didn’t get to see.

One of the highlights at the start of my trip was the chance to join my old Stitch ’n’ Bitch group in Cologne. I had already cast on a TGV shawl a few days beforehand. It really was super simple knitting and perfect for chatting at the same time. The pattern had been given to me by a former member of the group, DianaGKnits. She felt it was perfect for Schoppel Zauberball (many of the projects on Ravelry use this) and we had once spent ages in a wool shop in Cologne choosing Zauberball colours.

I used Noro Taiyo which is a linen, silk, wool blend. Cool to work with in summer and quite soft. Noro yarns are good for a few colour surprises so I had already rewound the ball, checking for any joins and to make a note of the colour sequence.

After Stitch ’n’ Bitch I continued knitting on this sockStriped sock on knitting needles

and kept TGV for my trip to my parents in Edinburgh. I finished it there, which was perfect timing as Mr Soknitsome and I then travelled on to north Germany. It was pretty cold there and I was really glad to have a scarf to keep the draught out of the neck of my jacket!

The pattern includes some variations and I did the slightly pointier ends (in the ribbing section). I also used almost two-thirds for the garter section and one-third ribbing instead of half and half. I wanted to make the shawl a bit deeper and I think this worked.

Would I knit this again? Most definitely. This can worn as a scarf or small shawl. It’s truly reversible, it doesn’t need blocking and is a great project when you need some ‘mindless’ knitting!stripey shawl with ribbed ruffle

aeroplane, Cologne, Noro, Regia, shawls, socks, Stitch 'n' Bitch, toe-up, trains

Not quite but soon! The top of my Ravelry queue reflects that too. List of knitting projects

First up Jeck. I’ve used this pattern before for Strrripes! which were also a travel project: Stripes – the love affair continues and for Making Merry. It’s mindless but not so mindless that you go crazy. Every second round has a little bit of activity with a few stitches to be slipped or purled. I’ll be starting at the toe (as usual) and working up so I’ll use Wendy Johnson’s Gusset Heel. I’ll be travelling on planes and trains for over 24 hours so that’s a lot of knitting time. You get a lot of knitting hours out of a ball of sock yarn!

Grey and red ball of yarn

Second in the queue is TGV. I have a ball of Noro Taiyo  for this.

Ball of yarn pinks and browns

Again this is very straightforward knitting; the first half is a garter crescent followed by a two-by-two ribbed frill. It will be perfect for when I visit my old Stitch ‘n’ Bitch group in Cologne as I’m sure there will be lots of chatting! After that? Probably more socks. This journey is the first of several…

6-ply, autumn, Lana Grossa, Mount Tomah, patterns, Ravelry, socks, sport weight, the Blue Mountains, toe-up, Wendy D Johnson

So we headed up to the Blue Mountains hoping to see some autumn colour but the day was wet and misty.

This photo shows part of the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah. We had a walk, sticking to the tarred and woodchip paths.

There was some colour – two beds of lovely dahlias.dahlias foreground trees in mist backgroundAnd here’s another splash of colour

bright striped socks on feet

These are my Socks to Brighten the Doomiest Day, knitted from Lana Grossa’s Meilenweit 6-Fach. This was given to me as part of a leaving present by my dear friend A. The pattern is Wendy D Johnson’s Sport Weight Toe-Up Socks with Gusset Heel.

Since the colours repeat back on themselves before moving on, I decided to knit the second one so that I’d have one of the centre colours (blue and purple) across each foot.  bright striped socks on feet - side view

The fit is not quite perfect but my Ravelry project page has notes to remind me of changes for next time!

cardigan, Coogee Pavilion, knitting, lampshade, progress, Ravelry, socks, Sydney, toe-up

Isn’t this just a great piece of knitting?

knitted lampshade in cafe in Sydney

You can see it in all its glory hanging from the ceiling in the Coogee Pavilion. (The Pavilion is an 1880’s building that started life as an aquarium and swimming pool and now houses a restaurant, café and more. Coogee is a beach suburb situated to the south-east of Sydney.)

This lampshade is a good metre in diameter and if I lived in the kind of home that had space for a giant chandelier I would definitely consider a lampshade like this one.

I have been knitting. I have. But nothing as spectacular as lampshades. Just chugging along with my cardigan which I’m now keen to finish so I can start the next project I have planned.

There’s another toe-up sock on my needles, too, but goes without saying and, anyway, I needed some easy and portable knitting to take to the Thursday night knitting get-together.  All will be revealed soon.

In the meantime, did you know there are 156 patterns for lampshades on Ravelry?

Art Gallery, Botanic Gardens, history, Sydney, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, walk, wool

This is a photo-laden post with no knitting so if you’re here for some pretties, they are of the scenic and not the woolly kind!

Since moving to Sydney I’ve continued with my regular morning walk. Six kilometres along the Rhine have been replaced with a good five around part of the harbour, the Opera House and through the Botanic Gardens. The photos here were taken over several days.

I begin parallel to Finger Wharf. This is the longest timbered-piled wharf in the world and started out as a wool-shipping wharf! Finger Wharf Woolloomooloo Bay SydneyThe old buildings have been renovated and turned into flats and restaurants.

This is one of a collection of seashell sculptures that are reverberation chambers. They are sometimes submerged so that natural sounds mix with the pre-recorded historical information. seashell sculptures Woolloomooloo Bay SydneyThe pathway climbs a little allowing a view of the Andrew “Boy” Charlton swimming pool. Charlton was an Australian swimmer who won five Olympic medals during the 1920s but there’s been some kind of swimming here since the first Europeans settled in Sydney. Woolloomooloo Bay was a working harbour and you can see the naval dockyard (still in operation) in the background.Outdoor pool and naval dockyard at Woolloomooloo Bay Sydney

Further along Mrs Macquarie’s Trail, we get to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. This is a popular tourist spot but bereft of people early in the morning. Walk round Mrs Macquarie’s Point and you’re confronted with The View – Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.Again, come early for people-free photos! Then it’s a walk around Farm Cove. On my right the Opera House in front of Sydney Harbour Bridge Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridgeand on my left this lovely Jacaranda tree. giant flowering Jacaranda tree Royal Botanic Gardens, SydneyLook closely and you’ll spot that lovely Jacaranda tree again once I’ve walked 1.4 km round the cove view across Farm Cove near Sydney Opera Houseand am nearing the Opera House. Then I then walk right round the outside of the Opera House to get a good view of the bridge. Sydney Harbour BridgeStraight across, you have The Rocks and Mr Soknitsome works in one of the office buildings here on the left.Sydney Harbour offices and cruise liner

Back into the Botanic Gardens near Government House, the residence of the Governor of NSW (this photo was taken from further inside the gardens).Government House in Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney I then meander my way home. I have little or no sense of direction and so I end up taking various paths but always at a fast pace. Knitting in the vineyards

AIWCC, Cologne, community, knitting, socks, Stitch 'n' Bitch, vineyard, wine

Today was a terrific Tuesday!

I went on an outing with some lovely ladies from the AIWCC. We took a train from Cologne to Dernau in the Ahr valley. This is a wine region and so we strolled along part of the Rotweinwanderweg, the Red Wine Trail, as far as Mayschoss. (There are some lovely pictures here and here but the website is just in German). We enjoyed a lunch of soups and salads with a glass of local wine here…German restaurant in vineyards…and then took a train from Mayschoss back to Cologne. The route we walked is not strenuous, and not really very long but it does make for a nice day out.

This year (yes, we have a lovely Walk & Talk Leader who organises this annually) the foliage was still very green and there were fat bunches of grapes hanging on many of the vines. black grapes hanging on vines The terraces are steep and we wondered how they actually harvest the grapes – can they use machines or must they harvest by hand? vineyards on hillsideFortunately, this year, there were some men working there (with small shears the size of paper scissors!) so we asked about the steepness.

  • No, they don’t wear special shoes, just ones with good tread.
  • It’s like mountaineering – it takes practice but they start young.
  • Yes, it can get a bit ‘exciting’ on the steep parts but even an eighty-year-old can work on the flat sections (and I suspect that in some families they do).

rows of vines on hillside

The man kind enough to answer our questions explained that the previous day’s rainy weather wasn’t good for the grapes at this stage as they’d started to rot and red wines need the skins of the grapes to give them the colour. He then gave us a couple of small bunches to taste. Yum!

So what does all this have to do with knitting? Well, a couple of the women are in our Stitch ‘n’ Bitch group and I did knit on a sock for a bit each way!
