Christmas, friends, Knitters' Guild NSW, Ravelry, skein, Sydney, yarn

The second Saturday of the month is when the Inner City group of the Knitters’ Guild NSW meets. This month’s meeting was a little different as Lyn and I were convening the meeting for the first time. Having expressed an interest in the position prior to the AGM, we found ourselves nominated by default since many members have already done a stint and were happy for someone else to take a turn. The Inner City group has about 80 members but many are unable to attend every month so we were probably only speaking in front of about 30 odd knitters and crocheters. We don’t just get together to socialise over our knitting and crochet. The Guild’s constitution states that the object of the Guild is to

  • encourage and maintain high standards in design and techniques
  • provide a forum for the exchange and provision of information
  • provide the opportunity for education in the craft

With these aims in mind, we had a bit of a brainstorm and came up with suggestions for talks and skills/techniques development for the coming year. We also collected lots of other excellent suggestions from members and now have the task of putting together an interesting and varied programme for 2016.

After the Guild meeting the knitting fun continued…

The Thursday night knitting group traditionally goes for afternoon tea in December. So we hopped on a train and travelled down to Circular Quay to enjoy a delightful tea at the Sir Stamford Hotel.  Not having knitted enough already, we were working away on our projects before we’d even had a sip of bubbly!

red yarn skein

There were fourteen of us and we were seated around one large table in a private room which was great for chatting. Thanks to Kelly, the organiser, there was some lovely Christmas fun and games with ‘guess the yardage’ of an anonymous skein, a lucky draw, and a Secret Santa Skein Swap. Here’s the lovely yarn I came home with.

This is a hand-dyed skein from Hawthorne Cottage Yarns. It’s a 4-ply wool/nylon blend that feels sturdy enough for some great socks. But the reds are so stunning that perhaps it should be a little something for around a neck? Choices, choices!

Whilst having tea, we even came up with a more appropriate name for our Thursday group. We’re easier to find now on Ravelry – we’re the Sydney CBD Knitters. So if you’re ever in Sydney on a Thursday evening, come on by!

Debbie Bliss, friends, Heidi Alander, KnitCamp2015, Knitters' Guild NSW, lace, shawls, yarn

As the name suggests, this shawl uses yarn I bought at KnitCamp 2015* to make a Nurmilintu shawl like that worn by Inner City Guild friend, 1funkyknitwit, during camp. It will come as no surprise that there are, cough, cough, a couple of changes to the original pattern.

I love the drape of 1funkyknitwit’s shawl (Ravelry project link) so decided to follow her example and knit mine on 4.5mm needles, which is larger than suggested in Heidi Alander’s pattern. Blue lace scarfHowever, once I got started, I began to wonder about the tension. Is 1funkyknitwit a tight or loose knitter? Would the 379 metres of yarn be enough if I were using larger needles? I decided to play safe and start the first lace section a little earlier – when I had 9 stitches fewer than instructed, since the pattern repeat is 9 stitches wide. I then continued to knit each section so that I finished with nine stitches fewer than stated in the pattern. I knitted the final lace section and still had yarn over. A not-insubstantial amount for someone who likes to use every last inch. I knitted the first 6 rows of the lace section again. Still plenty of yarn. I knitted the middle 6 rows. Yarn left? Yes. I knitted the last five rows and realised I didn’t have enough for the picot cast-off so I just did a stretchy cast off. I cut it more than a little fine – that tail dangling down is all that was left!

Since there were no picot points I just threaded a wire through the edge and blocked the two shorter sides straight. I pulled the curvy hypotenuse side into shape and pinned it.  This meant far less back-breaking time crawling round on the floor. The result is a shawly-kind-of-scarf that works as well over your shoulders as round your neck.

*The yarn is Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal (95% wool, 5% cashmere). It comes in large 100g balls and has lovely tweedy flecks in it. My teal colour has flecks of blue and turquoise. KnitCamp 2015 was run by the Knitters’ Guild of NSW  and I wrote in more detail here.

KnitCamp 2015 – the best bits

Last weekend the Knitters’ Guild NSW hosted KnitCamp 2015 at Stanwell Tops, just over an hour away from Sydney. There were all things knitterly from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.

On Friday evening there was a techniques turntables event.  I came away feeling more knowledgeable about German short rows, kitchener stitch and grafting. Afterwards the prizewinner for the Mystery Scarf competition was announced: a relatively new knitter made a fabulous double-knit scarf in memory of and depicting her cat!

Ann Budd held classes on fixing mistakes and we did scary things like dropping down several rows of stitches in order to reknit cables so they twisted the other way, dropping end-of-row stitches and she even cut a hole in her knitting to demonstrate fixing that too! I feel quite confident I could fix an incorrectly leaning cable without having to frog several inches of work, despite my sample here not being quite perfect. Knitted cables samples

But Ann didn’t just teach classes, she spent the whole weekend with us, hanging out with her knitting and putting up with all the fans and the adoration. And this, despite being quite poorly and losing her voice. She was wearing lovely knitted garments herself. Several of us admired a skirt she wore and she kindly lifted up her top to show us the waistband and the darts shaping the hips.

The Knitters’ Guild NSW has some new merchandise and we received lovely goody bags  with Guild merchandise, yarn, tools and retailers’ information inside.Knitters Guild NSW cotton bag

There were various workshops that we had signed up for when we registered. As well as Ann’s class I took part in a Fair-Isle/stranded knitting class. The teacher, Merrin, brought along some fantastic jumpers she’d made. As you can see from these samples, I still need more practice!

Fair Isle samples
The Christmassy-looking sample was knitted flat. Purling was hard so I was glad to be able to work in the round for the blue and grey piece. I started by holding both yarns in my left hand (I’m a continental knitter). When I got part-way through the snowflakes I switched to grey in left hand and blue in right and I think this makes the knitting more even.

We were very fortunate with the weather. People got up early to go walking and later, sat around knitting and crocheting outdoors if they didn’t have a class. I managed a bit of knitting outdoors in the sunshine at lunchtime. It was lovely early spring weather, just right for all the beautiful knitwear on show. Seen a cardigan you fancy on Ravelry? Someone was probably wearing it.

When they’re not knitting, Guild members are partial to enhancing their stash. On Saturday there was a retailers’ market. I was keen to see some Australian yarn up close and of course, once you’ve started petting and stroking, there’s no way you can just walk away. My purchases were quite modest – a skein of baby alpaca and mulberry silk (lace weight) from The House of Woolgreen yarn skein

and Ozifarmer’s Market Silky Merino Lace.

Grey and pink yarn

However, I then succumbed to the yarn that one of our local Guild branch members had used to make a beautiful Nurmilintu and so this also came home with me. teal yarn ballIt’s Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal. Several of us bought it for the same scarf. The hardest part was deciding on a colour; they were all fabulous. One knitter even cast hers on while we were there.

That isn’t the end of the yarn acquisition – I was also one of the lucky draw recipients and won this Ella Rae Lace Merino which is actually fingering/4-ply yarn.

Blue and green yarn skein

I was very happy to be sharing a room with some of the Inner City Guild branch, friends from Thursday night knitting. I really feel more like a part of things here, which is good since I’ve now been in Sydney for 10 months.

The whole weekend actually was very relaxing. On Saturday there were even two masseurs who went around giving everybody a neck and shoulder massage. It was wonderful. People knitted and crocheted everywhere and all the time – while listening to presentations (on using digital tools and Ravelry, and from a local publisher) and during show and tell, as well as when the winner of the Mystery Shawl competition was announced. In fact from early morning until the small hours of the following morning it was knit, knit, knit!

Thursday Night is Knit Night

cardigan, friends, patterns, Ravelry, shawls, yarn

Thursday night is knit night. It’s a lifesaver for someone like me, a trailing spouse slash part-time freelancer working from home. Not that I’m unhappy or bored in my own company (I’m a knitter after all!) but particularly in the weeks when Mr Soknitsome travels overseas on business, I appreciate the friendliness and warm-heartedness of my knitting buddies. We have a good laugh. We ooh and aah over each others’ projects and yarn  – and there was some breathtakingly drop-dead gorgeous yarn out tonight! We sympathise over daytime office dramas. I find it pretty useful, too, for understanding how things work here. I now know where I’ll go in search of my next pair of specs. I hear about places to see, museums to visit and festivals to enjoy. It helps me to feel at home here and that is priceless.

So what have I been knitting?

I’ve knitted a bit more of my East Gable Shawl. This is a pattern by Judy Marples and is as always very straightforward. This pattern is slightly less intuitive than some others as it grows in a feathery/fern way rather than geometrically. I’m using Madeline Tosh Merino Light in a kind of blueish turquoise and I love it. It’s a bit hard to see the pattern here – it’s all so squashed but I  know I’m going to love this once it’s blocked.light blue lace shawlThis is my home knitting. Since Mr Soknitsome is away I have a little more time, so I listen to various book readings on the BBC while I knit. Some are classics that make great audio dramas especially as you know you’d struggle to read the book; others are new publications. They are always good.

Thursday knit night really requires simpler knitting. This is the body of Rye. beige cardigan on knitting needlesIt’s a very new cardigan pattern from Thea Colman. I’m using a yarn that comes in limited un-dyed colours – there are flock numbers instead of dye lots! It softens up after a bath. How do I know? Because I’m a good girl and always knit tension squares. I’m being quite adventurous here and knitting an in-between size. More soon…

European Knitting

Cologne, friends, Germany, gift, knitting, Ravelry, shawls, Stitch 'n' Bitch, yarn

The five weeks I spent in Europe were lovely. Time passed quickly and although I (and later Mr Soknitsome, too) spent time with many family members and friends, there were, sadly, people we didn’t get to see.

One of the highlights at the start of my trip was the chance to join my old Stitch ’n’ Bitch group in Cologne. I had already cast on a TGV shawl a few days beforehand. It really was super simple knitting and perfect for chatting at the same time. The pattern had been given to me by a former member of the group, DianaGKnits. She felt it was perfect for Schoppel Zauberball (many of the projects on Ravelry use this) and we had once spent ages in a wool shop in Cologne choosing Zauberball colours.

I used Noro Taiyo which is a linen, silk, wool blend. Cool to work with in summer and quite soft. Noro yarns are good for a few colour surprises so I had already rewound the ball, checking for any joins and to make a note of the colour sequence.

After Stitch ’n’ Bitch I continued knitting on this sockStriped sock on knitting needles

and kept TGV for my trip to my parents in Edinburgh. I finished it there, which was perfect timing as Mr Soknitsome and I then travelled on to north Germany. It was pretty cold there and I was really glad to have a scarf to keep the draught out of the neck of my jacket!

The pattern includes some variations and I did the slightly pointier ends (in the ribbing section). I also used almost two-thirds for the garter section and one-third ribbing instead of half and half. I wanted to make the shawl a bit deeper and I think this worked.

Would I knit this again? Most definitely. This can worn as a scarf or small shawl. It’s truly reversible, it doesn’t need blocking and is a great project when you need some ‘mindless’ knitting!stripey shawl with ribbed ruffle

Marvellous Monday

AIWCC, cardigan, Cologne, friends, Monday, Rhine, sample, Stitch 'n' Bitch, swatch

Mr Soknitsome left a fortnight ago yesterday and it no longer feels like just-another-business-trip but more like this-is-the-new-reality-for-the-next-few-weeks.

Fortunately, yesterday was one of those Mondays that are especially nice. Stitch ‘n’ Bitch met in the morning. Schools have broken up for the summer and many people are away so it was a fairly small group but we did welcome a new member to our group. The highlight of the morning was a longstanding member who only ever knits at Stitch ‘n’ Bitch finally finishing her Baktus-style scarf, earning her a round of applause!

I started a sample square/tension swatch for a little cardigan I want to make. Nice and easy knitting which leaves my brain free for all the lovely chat! I also made the most of having other knitters around to get measured. I needed the measurement across my back from shoulder-blade to shoulder-blade. Impossible to do by yourself but necessary to determine which size to knit because of the top-down contiguous construction of Ankestrick’s Same Same but different cardigan. This cardigan is knitted in 4-ply/fingering wool but at a looser gauge than when knitting socks.

three red tension squares gauge swatches

After spending the morning with some of my favourite people, which in itself makes the day marvellous, I then spent the evening out with more lovely friends. There’s a part of Cologne just to the south of me where a disproportionally high number of AIWCC members live. Many get together once a month for dinner. Last night we sat outdoors overlooking the Rhine. Marvellous.

It’s summertime. Have a fling!

bag, Cologne, friends, knitting, Ravelry, summer

Beige and red knitted bagSo at the end of Week One of Something New, I’m finally sharing a project I finished recently. Those of you who kindly voted on your favourite colour combinations may well have wondered whether I’d taken any notice of your choices. This lovely little bag doesn’t actually take long to make. It’s a very straightforward project.

My first step, when I  embark on a new project, is to see whether there are any helpful comments on Ravelry. I was rather surprised at the number of remarks (you could almost say complaints) concerning the size of the bag. The pattern is FREE so you can check it out before committing in any way to the project. The dimensions are all listed on the first page. I did actually make this bag ever so slightly wider and taller but I had no intention of lining it and assumed that a larger bag would just lead to heavier items being carried around and ultimately the bag stretching.

As mentioned before, Mr Soknitsome and I had a couple of weekends away in the run up to him leaving Cologne. I made this Summer Fling bag for my Very Good Friend in Ludwigsburg.

It was perfect for her phone, keys and sunglasses as we enjoyed a few hours among the classic cars on display at the city’s Baroque palace.

A big thank you to everyone who indicated their favourite colour combinations for the Summer Fling bag featured in my previous post.

There were a total of 48 votes: number 1 is the raspberry and beige combination (11 votes) followed by  olive and beige (10 votes).

Knitting for Others – the final projects of 2013

Christmas, family, friends, gift, knitting, loop, Ravelry, Rowan, shawls, socks

There wasn’t much Christmas knitting done here at all: just a new pair of socks for each of my daughters.

Pair of wine red textured socks

A touch of class

Pair of purple-grey socks

Pinot Noir

However, I did make a couple of loops for other presents: one for my mother and one for a very good knitting friend. I adapted a classic pattern, Cheryl Niamath’s Wisp (of which there are 4795 projects on Ravelry to date!). I used fine silk and mohair blends including Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze Glamour, which is strung with sequins.

Teal lace cowl

The most challenging project was the Auf Wiedersehen shawl I made for a friend who has now returned to the US. As well as being part of the same international community (with a knitting group) she was my neighbour and we sometimes got together just to knit and chat. It was lovely and I miss her.

This shawl is Judy Marples’ Vigneto Shawl and I loved knitting it. It’s slightly asymmetrical but very straightforward to knit. You can vary the proportions of vines to leaves. The leaf part really comes into its own once the shawl is blocked.

Wishing everyone all the best for 2014!
